Speech/Language Pathologist

Business: Boys Town National Research Hospital

Job Summary:
Under general direction of the Director, Center for Childhood Deafness Language and Learning and the Associate Director, Center for Childhood Deafness Language and Learning, performs professional work as a member of the multidisciplinary team with particular responsibilities for providing evaluation and intervention services for Boys Town National Research Hospital (BTNRH) patients, students in school-based services who have speech and language disorders, and professionals serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Schedule: 8:00am-5:00pm M-F with one night per week until 6:00pm

Responsibilities:
  • Provides evaluations of auditory, communication, developmental, academic and pre-academic skills for infants, children and adults with hearing loss and communication disorders.
  • Designs and provides intervention services in the areas of speech, language and voice for infants, children, and adults with communication disorders.
  • Consults and conferences with principals, teachers, families and other staff, including: officers from other agencies and medical practitioners.
  • Prepares and maintains reports/records on patients/students.
  • Develops training programs/materials and conducts seminars for families and professionals.
  • Assists and participates in the design and implementation of selected clinical research projects.
  • Serves as a mentor for graduate students and clinical fellows in the area of assessment and intervention with infants, children and/or adults with communication disorders, especially individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing or individuals with developmental language disorders.
  • Assists in the quality improvement program for monitoring hospital records for patients with hearing loss and communication disorders.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Ability to apply knowledge in the area of normal speech and language development and speech language disorders.
  • Ability to apply knowledge in the area of development, hearing disorders, amplification and sensory aid systems.
  • Ability to apply knowledge to family systems.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of communication disorders of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of a variety of approaches to assessment and intervention with infants, children and adults with communication disorders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an environment that encourages teamwork, interdependence, communication and ethical actions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate and/or develop proficient sign language skills.
  • Ability to serve as a professional advocate for children who are deaf or hard of hearing at BTNRH.
  • Ability to use equipment such as sensory aids, personal computers and other technology that supports communication development.
  • Ability to function independently as a professional with general supervision.
  • Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.

Required Qualifications:
  • Masters in science or Masters in art degree in Speech/Language Pathology
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in the area of evaluation and/or interventions with patients with communication disorders; experience with hearing loss
  • Knowledge of psycholinguistics, speech, language and auditory development assessment and intervention techniques for persons with communication disorders, family systems, and development along the life span
  • Must have or be eligible for appropriate state licensing and must hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
