Director of Facility Operations

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions. The Director of Facility Operations is responsible for managing the Museum Facilities Department and will oversee the maintenance of all buildings and related building system operations for the Museum campus.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Building Operations:

• Working closely with the Assistant Director and the Facilities team, ensure the effectiveness of facilities operations, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems.

• Oversee the Museum's plant management including the centralized cooling and heating system, life safety systems, a comprehensive maintenance program, building management controls system and utility energy management programs.

• Provide technical leadership for building repairs, preventive maintenance programs, required equipment and facilities related inspections, facility and/or building system emergencies, and planned upgrades.

• Maintain compliance for all applicable building safety codes, manage and coordinate all required inspections for all facilities life safety equipment and operating systems as per City, State and Federal regulatory agencies.

Staff Management:

• Foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration within the department, demonstrating a high commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.

• Provide the leadership, training and coaching to ensure staff provide a high level of customer service and communication with other Museum staff.

• Ensure best safety practices for the department are established and maintained through regular training programs and consistent compliance with all OSHA and safety standards.

• Working with the Assistant Director, 1) manage individual building union trade shops and provide direction to shop managers and supervisory staff, 2) coordinate the priorities of shop work and projects based on schedules, emergency repairs and requested completion date, 3) ensure adequate staff coverage at all times.

Design Reviews, Planning and Administration:

• Perform and manage engineering design reviews for projects and upgrades, and provide technical and project management assistance.

• Participate with the Senior Director on strategic planning for capital projects and upgrades to the Museum campus.

• Plan and manage the Department budget.

• Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly departmental reports for the Senior Director which will include financial information, work order system status and facility repairs/projects updates, and other information as needed.

Project Management:

• Manage repairs and upgrades performed by outside contractors as assigned to the Facilities Department.

• Coordinate with other Museum departments to ensure work is properly scheduled and performed with minimal impacts when feasible to Museum operations and visitation.

• Ensure Facilities Department responsibilities to effectuate proper maintenance and appearance of all exhibit areas and public halls are treated as a high, daily priority to achieve the best visitor experience.

Required Qualifications:

• 7-10 years of management experience in a similar role, experience within a larger facilities operation preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree required, degree in mechanical engineering or related field strongly preferred.
• Proven management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to function as a highly effective manager and problem solver in a fast paced, ever-changing work environment.
• Ability to handle the demands of a highly public facing environment, and provide leadership and collaboration across various and Museum groups.
• Effective communication skills with a positive solution-oriented approach to remediating problems.
• Technical skills in the areas of mechanical and electrical, plant operations and building systems are required.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions based on sound assessments and understanding of the Department and Museum’s mission are a must.
