Fall Internship: Fundraising Support
Background:
As the world’s largest dedicated peacebuilding organization, Search for Common Ground (Search) has led programs in over 40 countries to help societies channel their differences, moving away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative solutions. Since our founding in 1982, we have been instrumental in defining citizen-led peacebuilding and demonstrating its efficacy. As we embarked on creating a 10-year strategic plan to respond to the changing nature of conflict, we sought to move past country-based programming, and instead, prioritize conflict where the repercussions of instability across entire regions are most consequential. As part of this structural change, we will necessarily transition out of some places where we have operated for many years, even decades.
One of those places is North Macedonia, where Search for Common Ground has been working since 1994. Search for Common Ground is in the final stages of transitioning out of the country, and will close its North Macedonia office by June 2021. In Macedonia, local Search staff have already established a local NGO, the Center for Common Ground (CCG). Using innovative tools such as education, media production, public service announcements, training, and theatre, CCG engages in pragmatic long-term processes of conflict transformation across all levels of society.
As Search for Common Ground closes its office in North Macedonia, it is committed to providing a comprehensive support package to CCG to transfer the necessary skills, systems, policies, and processes to the local context.
Internship Summary
The intern will support the Search for Common Ground (SFCG) Macedonia office in completing key tasks as SFCG transitions out of the country, including business development, reporting, communications, and knowledge management. The intern will dedicate most of their time towards business development/fundraising for CCG, with additional support for ad hoc transition tasks outlined in more detail below. The intern will report directly to the Senior Officer for Business Development (Asia), with dotted lines to the Country Director of Search Macedonia and the Senior Officer for Programs (Asia). This is an exciting opportunity for somebody seeking to learn more about how international non-profit organizations ensure the sustainability of their work, contribute towards building local ownership and capacity, and to secure long-term funding for a local organization doing critical peacebuilding work in North Macedonia.
Main Responsibilities:
- Assist with the development of grant proposals for CCG, including but not limited to writing proposal narratives, developing theories of change, articulating program activities, drafting logframes, and developing M&E plans and indicators.
- Updating key trackers such as the grants tracker, opportunities tracker, and donor maps
- Provide extensive and detailed research on specific topics affecting North Macedonia and countries in the region.
- Provide writing and editing support for key transition documents, including Organizational Capacity Assessment Tools, fundraising strategies, branding and visibility strategies, capacity statements and context assessments
- Edit English-language reports and communications materials for clarity and precision.
- Support on communications activities, including compiling updates from CCG, revamping website content, and creating other communications materials (e.g. success stories from past projects, quotes from participants, photographs)
- Assist with knowledge management tasks (e.g. maintaining consultant databases or working on contract management)
- Support meeting logistics and travel planning
- Provide administrative and logistical support, including writing Terms of Reference, Purchase Requests, Meeting Minutes and other related tasks
Qualifications:
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills in English
- Understanding of North Macedonia’s socio-political context and international peacebuilding work
- Excellent administrative skills and a high level of personal efficiency, motivation and ability to balance multiple urgent or important tasks
- Demonstrated attention to detail and procedures, and able to meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members
- Computer literacy proficiency, including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
Desirable:
- Demonstrable experience working for international or local non-profits
- Demonstrable knowledge of fundraising and business development for international or local non-profits
- BA or MA (completed or in progress) in peace and conflict studies, international relations, social science, arts, or a related field.
- Practical experience with program design, monitoring, and evaluation.
- High level of analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, creativity, and enthusiasm while working in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with minimal supervision.
