Hearing and Speech Specialist - Position Overview
Under direction, provides speech and language pathology services for assigned individuals; conducts screening and assessment of communication disorders and oral-motor/swallowing disorders; develops activities and programs to encourage the development of effective communication; advises, consults, and monitors professional and paraprofessional staff involvement in hearing and speech development.

Hearing and Speech Specialist - Job Responsibilities
1. Provides speech and language pathology services for assigned individuals. Conducts screening and assessment of communication disorders and oral-motor/swallowing disorders. Develops and implements therapy plans. Conducts communication assessment to determine the communicating level and the need for augmentative communication. Conducts clinical swallowing assessment to determine the most lenient diet texture and to allow for the safest oral intake for each assigned individual. Plans, develops and evaluates training programs for the development of speech, language and hearing skills, including cognitive skills and alternative modes of communication.
2. As a member of Interdisciplinary Habilitation Team, develops a comprehensive service plan which optimally meets each assigned individual’s needs, participates in the development of goals and objectives based on the identified needs of the assigned individuals. Incorporates relevant suggestions into individual treatment plans developed for assigned individual. Assists other team members in developing plans for individuals.
3. Develops activities and programs to encourage the development of effective communication. Advises, consults, and monitors professional and paraprofessional staff involvement in hearing and speech development. Instructs, monitors, and revises communication skill training programs to ensure that the programs are implemented to facilitate progress in communication development. Instructs and monitors swallowing protocols and strategies to ensure safe swallowing for each assigned individual.
4. Provides speech/language therapy and services to assigned individuals as warranted or recommended, including augmentative communication training and dysphagia treatment.
5. Trains unit staff to implement communication skills training programs for individuals with speech and language problems. Trains unit staff in the basic development of communication skills and strategies for communication with verbal and non-verbal individuals. Trains unit staff in the area of swallowing protocols and strategies to ensure safe swallowing.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Hearing and Speech Specialist - Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires possession of a master's degree in speech-language pathology or audiology from an approved program. 
2. Requires a license to practice speech-language pathology or audiology from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (DFPR). 
3. Requires a valid, current Professional Educator License (PEL) with endorsement as a speech-language pathologist (either teaching or non-teaching) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Hearing and Speech Specialist – Conditions of Employment
1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related Policies and guidance.
2. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Hearing and Speech Associate - Position Overview
Under general supervision, for a period not to exceed two years, receives direction, professional guidance and technical review in providing clinical speech-language and/or audiology services to an individual population with communication, swallowing and/or hearing disorders: administers tests and interprets test results; evaluates the nature and extent of impairments; selects more specialized diagnostic measures or procedures; develops and modifies the treatment plan and therapy of individuals in an individual population.

Hearing and Speech Associate – Job Responsibilities
1. For a period not to exceed two years, receives direction, professional guidance and technical review in providing clinical speech-language and/or audiology services to an individual population with communication, swallowing and/or hearing disorders. Under the clinical supervision of a licensed audiologist, evaluates and prescribes a treatment/habilitation program for individuals with hearing losses.
2. Under the clinical supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist, applies clinical techniques, speech-language assessment and therapy to individuals with disorders in the comprehension and production of speech and language, impairments resulting from organic causes such as birth defects, illness, or accident or functional causes related to mental or emotional problems, learning deficits or social deprivation, or intellectual or developmental difficulties.
3. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team for both inpatient and outpatient programs.
4. Provides basic interpretation and guidance to other treatment providers regarding the management of an individual population.
5. Initiates special referrals for ontological, psychological, audiological, neurological, dental, medical, and other special examinations.
6. Completes written evaluations for placement in the individual's clinical record.
7. Prepares to take the written examination required for licensure by the State of Illinois as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist and/or to meet the criteria to qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) issued by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Hearing and Speech Associate – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
• Requires extensive knowledge of techniques, methods and principles utilized in clinical practice of speech-language pathology and/or audiology.
• Requires extensive knowledge of the application of speech-language pathology and/or audiology information to the habilitation and/or rehabilitation of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who also have receptive and/or expressive communication disorders.

Hearing and Speech Associate – Conditions of Employment
