Youth Employment Program Internship

Introduction:

Mayor Cory Mason and the City of Racine are excited to announce the Youth Employment Program is back for the summer of 2024! The Youth Employment Program is an 8-week internship program that provides local youth, ages 16 to 24, with work placement directly within City of Racine departments. Youth employees will earn $15.91/hour on a part-time schedule.

Our mission is to provide job accessibility in the City of Racine by introducing readily available training that leads to professional opportunities in city government.

Position Purpose:

Youth will have the opportunity to work alongside City of Racine professionals completing hands-on projects, job shadowing and gaining authentic work experience. We offer a variety of positions and departments including Marketing/social media, Construction, Real Estate Inspections Engineering, IT/ Cyber Security, Early Education, Environmental Science and much more!

Expected student outcome:

Gain insight into various professional city government career paths.

Develop confidence and the ability to adapt and overcome challenges.

Experience working with city government, specifically the City of Racine.

Network and build professional relationships to enhance your future.

Gain realistic and practical experience in various fields allowing them to gain knowledge.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties of a summer internship for a city government department position can vary depending on the specific department and its needs. However, here are some common tasks and responsibilities that interns might be expected to perform.

Conditions of Employment:

 

Interns will be placed at one of the City of Racine department and/or division based on their current skills, interests, and video submission.

 

Youth must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the application date.

Interns may receive training for their specific department they will work in.  Evey interns training may or may not be the same.

Works schedule will depend on the departments need that the intern is placed in.

Intern will receive professional development training every Friday from 9 am- 1 pm.

Interns will be assigned to a supervisor and/or mentor who will provide guidance, support, and feedback.

Work duties can vary from each day during the 8 weeks of the Youth Employment Program.

Interns will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner during the 8- week internship.

Interns may be required to complete certain requirements to successfully complete the internship such as completing a final assignment and participating in a survey.

Department lead will clearly communicate with interns what their duties are during the 8 weeks.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.Age 16 -- 24 at the time of application
2. Submitting part 1 and part 2 of application

NOTE: This is Part 1 of the application. Part 2 is to submit a video (1-2 minutes long) including the information below.

 

PART 2 (Video Submission):

1. Introduce yourself: name, school, major/pathway, and something cool about yourself?
2. What are your career interests and why?

3. What do you hope to accomplish or learn from the Youth Employment Program?

4. What do you like to do for fun?

#FundamentalFridays: Every Friday from 9am-1pm

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Some departments may require an intern to have some background in a specific field before the beginning of the internship. 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

 

Ability to communicate kindly when dealing with the public.

Being flexible and willing to work with others. 

Being able to take directions and receive feedback.

Being on- time at the beginning of your work shift on time.

Communicating any changes or emergencies that will affect your attendance.

Willing to attend meetings, events and training sessions related to your department.

Kind and easy to get along with and collaborate in a co-working space..

Having a can-do mindset and being open to learning new task outside your comfort zone.

Special Requirements:

If the department has special requirements youth interns will be made aware of ahead of time.

Physical Demands of the Position:

Physical demands will vary depending on the department the intern is assigned to.

Department manager or contact will clearly state what the physical demands will be during training.

Equipment Used:

Equipment used may vary per department for the summer internship program. Youth interns will receive the proper training needed if they are assigned to use special equipment.
