Camp Encore/Coda

Bunk Counselor

June - August 2023 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

I was around music 24/7, and it gave me great experience in teaching music, coaching ensembles, and caring for children. Also, the relationships between fellow counselors and staff members was always positive and engaging.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I just wish it was easier to get to from Chicago.

Advice

Expect it to be difficult, but rewarding. You will be given a lot of responsibilities you may have never had before, but it's a great learning experience and there is a whole support system for staff, so you're never on your own.

Senior Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

This year I got to do so much teaching in both private voice lesson settings and larger classroom settings. Camp is one of the few places where I can really use all of my assorted skills, as there is just so much to do. I felt needed and respected by everyone I worked with.

What I wish was different

Camp can be a little hectic, and communication can sometimes be a little less than ideal. Everything always works out in the end, though!

Advice

Apply early so that you can do the things you actually want to do! I was a last minute hire my first year, and I didn’t have much choice in what I participated in.

Piano Counselor

June - August 2018 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

I had a great experience working at Camp Encore/Coda this past summer. It could be overwhelming from time to time, but the opportunity to work directly in the music field and teach, accompany, perform and mentor was priceless. I enjoyed the freedom and flexibility I had in choosing repetoire for myself and for my students so that I could experience that responsiblity. I also enjoyed working with the kids, spending time in the bunks with them and participating in activities, such as campfire, trip days to local lakes, and evening concerts. My employers were incredible people-they prepared us and provided constant support and communicated with us well. I made very close friendships with the other counselors and connections with the faculty.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I wish had been different. From the interview to the day I left the camp, things may have been a little bumpy due to a hiccup in communication or things were just stressful/overwhelming, but there were no glaring issues that I would wish to have been changed.

Advice

If you are looking to solely focus on music, you are entering this with the wrong mindset. If you are thinking solely about what you will gain from this eperience, you are entering this with the wrong mindset. The kids are you're number one priority, and I know you will grow to love that fact. It is not an easy job at all. It is demanding and stressful. But it is worth it and is very rewarding as you go along. It is the best experience I have ever had, and you will grow in every way if you allow yourself to be open minded and active in your role and job.
